Dairy NZ / Healthy Hoof App

Working with New Zealand's dairy farmers

Overview

The Objective

Prevention of lameness is critical to the welfare of cows and to a farmer's bottom line.  DairyNZ partnered with us to design an app to help farmers track and treat lame cows and manage herd health. The app needed to be easy to use and entering information had to be fast. The app also needed to share a farm's data with multiple farm workers and their vet securely. It also had to be tailored to often larger farmer fingers!

The Solution

Working with the DairyNZ Animal Care Advisory team, our UX designers mapped out the multiple app user journeys in a wireframe. The designers then visualised every app screen and demonstrated these via a design prototype. User feedback was gathered throughout the process and the designs adapted based on user input. Farmers can easily flag lame cows with one tap on-screen when out in the paddock. They can then highlight where the hoof has been treated on a cleverly designed hoof visual. The reporting module tracks trends and exports data for the farmer to share and discuss with their vet. The data is housed in a sophisticated cloud based database, and the app works both online and offline, which is perfectly suited to New Zealand's farm environment.
